Eid-Ul-Fitr: Not Without Righteousness!

In the name of Allah, Ever Gracious, Ever Merciful —

 Eid-Ul-Fitr: Not Without Righteousness!

The days of the holy month of Ramadan are coming to an end; days of fasting as a vow to the Almighty to better our lives and become good human beings and good Muslims. A new Eid is coming to grace our lives with yet another hope. The Eid-ul-Fitr is a joyful celebration inviting Muslims to meditate on the good values they developed and maintained during the days of Ramadan. The Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, at the sighting of the new moon, and it marks the completion of the fasting of Ramadan.

The month of sacrifice acts as a guideline so that we may ready our lives to submit to the Divine Will come what may. So the month of Ramadan remains ever an intense training period. The hearing, vision, language, mind, all are subject to strict control. This discipline practised for a month is used as a model for the eleven months to come. After we have passed this test, God Almighty gives us the reward of an Eid.

The joy we feel is deeper than what we feel when we wear new clothes. Of course, clothes have a certain relationship with the Eid, but the Eid which awaits us does not depend on clothes. Think of the poor who cannot afford good clothes. The most beautiful garment after Ramadan, during the celebration of the Eid-ul-Fitr and after is Righteousness (Taqwa). Taqwa is that most beautiful garment which embellishes man both spiritually and materially.

To what avail are good words if we do not position ourselves on the path of truth? We need to practise what we say. Whoever formulates the good intention to do a good deed, must promptly act upon it while taking God Almighty as Witness and Support, for one who seeks God Almighty with sincerity, every step which he takes shall make him move forward towards his quest. Each new day will be for him better than the past one. Surely any action devoid of Taqwa is vain. This is equivalent to saying that Taqwa is the essence of the existence of man. Thus, it is our duty as Muslims to ever consolidate the state of our Taqwa so as to reap the rewards continually.

I wish an Eid-Ul-Fitr Mubarak to all brothers and sisters of the entire Muslim community, in Mauritius and in the world and pray to God Almighty that we may live up to our name as Muslims (submitters to God Almighty) by ever performing good deeds with good intentions to promote peace and harmony in the world as taught by the Almighty and our beloved master and role model, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Insha-Allah, Ameen. Eid Mubarak!

An Appeal

Dear Reader

65 years ago Mauritius Times was founded with a resolve to fight for justice and fairness and the advancement of the public good. It has never deviated from this principle no matter how daunting the challenges and how costly the price it has had to pay at different times of our history.

With print journalism struggling to keep afloat due to falling advertising revenues and the wide availability of free sources of information, it is crucially important for the Mauritius Times to survive and prosper. We can only continue doing it with the support of our readers.

The best way you can support our efforts is to take a subscription or by making a recurring donation through a Standing Order to our non-profit Foundation.
Thank you.
